Houston, We Have a Problem

Houston 1

If you are my age or older, you will remember when Houston was the home of “Mission Control” for our space missions. We should feel sorry for our children that they won’t know the wonders of NASA. It seems our government traded NASA for the NSA spying on us. Instead of exploring new frontiers, our government is obsessed with exploring our personal e-mail, phone records and monitoring what we say on Facebook. Yet, the loss of our space program is only an indicator of different priorities from our national government.

Another symptom of a change in our country is what is happening down in Houston. (Houston to Pastors: Forget Your Sermons Now Want Your Speeches) When I heard about how the Mayor of Houston was treating her churches, the first thought that popped into my head was how much I wish I lived in Houston so I could run against her in the next election. You can relax. I’m not seriously thinking of doing this! (Mom, don’t worry.)

Just like the first astronaut to step foot on the moon declared, “This is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” So likewise Houston’s Mayor took a giant leap in showing how quickly our freedom of speech can vanish.

The problem is not about the specifics of what she did. It’s about the idea that any elected official would use a bullying tactic against the very people who are the fabric of her own city. As an effort to harass and intimidate the pastors in her city, she required them to submit their sermons to her ahead of time so that her staff could scrutinize the message.

Having spent years in municipal government myself, one of my concerns is that this is only the first city attempting this tactic. I speak from having first-hand knowledge of how bad ideas tend to metastasize from one city to another. This mayor is most likely one of dozens more being advised to do this. She garnered national attention for her city. You and I might see this as a negative, but for homosexual activists, this is a positive accomplishment. This could have happened anywhere and if not nipped in the bud, it’s only a matter of time before it will happen again.

Our response must be strong, loud and clear. Courage breeds more courage! On Sunday, thousands of concerned citizens congregated in Houston for a momentous event.

Here’s my advice for the pastors of Houston: Write out your sermons and load them up with the Gospel. Who knows, perhaps some will hear the truth for the first time and have their lives changed as a result. If they are spending hours reading the truth of God, it’s entirely possible that the Lord will speak to their hearts and they will be open to ideas they have never been exposed to before.

I have been going to church every week since before I was born and can attest to many times when the pastor spoke from his heart and veered far from what he had prepared because the Holy Spirit led him in another direction. Therefore, the mayor would be better off ordering the city staff to attend the church services if they want a more accurate rendering of what is actually being said in the Houston churches. But, we all know the goal of the governing authorities is to intimidate those who speak the truth.

These Gestapo-like tactics do not belong in any place in our country. Freedom of speech is enshrined in our Constitution. If the people of Houston fight back hard and clear, the result could be such shame and humiliation brought upon this city that no one else will think of it.

Some think Houston’s mayor has made her city the laughing stock of the country, but really it’s not funny. We all may have had times when we wondered how a horrible person was able to get elected, but it should also serve as a warning to the rest of us that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

WHAT YOU CAN DO…

1.) Turn this into a teachable moment for your city leaders! Send them this newsletter and put them on warning that we support freedom of speech and we are glad we don’t have a Mayor/City Council/Board of Aldermen as ignorant of our Constitution as Houston.

We owe it to them and our own future existence to expose to what level the enemies of liberty will dare to go to extend themselves. They are the ones who picked this fight against the very principles that are woven into the fabric of our way of life.

2.) Share your thoughts on what is happening in your city. I would love to hear from you. Please offer your wisdom here: HomeFront@CynthiaDavis.net

3.) If you know someone who needs to understand the importance of this issue, share this newsletter.

4.) Help us communicate. Any contribution will be used to further our research and inform others. You can mail a check to Cynthia Davis, 1008 Highway K, O’Fallon, MO 63366
