Holding Elected Officials Accountable
We all want to have a great Country. But what are we supposed to do when our elected officials go awry? So many present themselves as caring about our issues when they are candidates, so how can there be such a remarkable transformation after many of them get into office?
How can we hold them accountable?
On our show this week, we talk with one of our favorite citizen lobbyists, Lisa Pannett. She shares with us from her vast experience of holding legislator’s “feet to the fire”.
Here are my suggestions:
- Focus on common values.
- Approach each other with humility and respect.
- Our most powerful weapon is the truth. We must use this as our foundation for every discussion. Truth should be more important than friendships and ambitions, but even if it’s not a shared value, we must never take it out of the dialogue.
We can make a difference!
Please share your experience. What success or failures have you had in keeping your elected officials accountable?
WHAT YOU CAN DO…
1.) We have to understand the issues and the players to be able to hold officeholders accountable. The only way we can keep score is if we take the time to read and learn. Writing letters to the editor, (if they get published), can help others think through the issues. There’s much more on our show today. You can hear it by clicking here.

With each passing day, it’s becoming more and more clear. The solution is not to hold our politicians’ feet to the fire, but to hold the politicians in the fire in accordance with an important lesson taught us by a Wandering Jew about 2,000 years ago: “Beware of false prophets (politicians), who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. You may know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree brings forth good fruit, but a corrupt tree brings forth bad fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth bad fruit, nor yet can a bad tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that does not bring forth good fruit shall be hewn down and cast into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you may know them.” – Matthew 7:15-20 New Matthew Bible
Certainly, every politician who lies to get elected is like a tree bearing bad fruit.

The sad thing today is a larger number of the people that get into office our would like to get elected, will say anything to make people thank that they really will do what they say they will do. The whole Republican Party is a great example of this today. Most of us that can see this are feed up with this and the sad thing is, I find that most people do not have a clue as to what is going on.
