The Complete Story
Where are we headed?
It’s hard to listen to the news about shootings, fiscal cliffs and governmental obesity every year. I don’t even like reading e-mail from well-meaning acquaintances who bear more bad news. Many want to quit caring about their government. One of my friends summed it up well by saying, “I am weary of politics.” I fully understand. It’s hard to care about something and work hard for change only to be disappointed in the result, time and time again. -
How to Shop!
You are voting with your pocketbook
You can tell what a person values by looking at his credit card statement. We vote with our wallets every day for what we think is important. Does anyone remember about 20 years ago when Walmart boasted about selling “Made in the USA” products? If you are too young to remember, you will have to take my word for it.
People like the price of Chinese-made goods, but when our factories go out of business, we act surprised. This Christmas season when I attempted to place my Christmas candle order, here is what I found:
Syracuse used to have a thriving candle manufacturing industry with five candle companies. Two brothers — Alexis and Norbert Muench — started Muench-Kreuzer in 1925. They were executives at another local candle company — Will & Baumer. Will & Baumer had been in the Syracuse area since 1855, but moved to Tennessee in 2009 to become a candle importer.

How to Quit
The legislators have not even been sworn into their next terms and already two of them are quitting. Jesse Jackson Jr. , the US representative from Southwestern Missouri. You may be wondering why they would run for office if they were not intending to serve for the two-year term. Most of us in the real world feel a sense of duty to honor the commitment to those who donated their time, energy and money to help us get elected, but that’s because we don’t usually factor in the partisan apparatus behind the scenes. -
Last Ounce of Courage
What is it going to take?
There are few things in life more discouraging than knowing how to correct the course of our state and nation, yet not being able to do it. A St. Louis Post Dispatch article this week mentioned me in an article about who will run for mayor of my city.
Last week we watched the DVD of the movie “The Last Ounce of Courage”.

How To Change Our Culture
Last weekend, Bernie and I went to Dallas, Texas to attend a conference presented by Wallbuilders. We were with some of the front line signature scholars and historians who helped analyze what happened in the election. David Barton shared with us that he knew a lot of good candidates were going to lose when he saw how the ballot issues were going. Categorically, America voted for bigger government and lower moral standards. We are reaping the results of what we have sown in our educational system. If you teach students that moral values don’t matter, history is meaningless and the constitution is insignificant, this will be the final product. Yet, if we respond appropriately, there is good reason to believe we can still educate our friends, neighbors and families. -
Thank You!!! You made a difference!
We’ve been together every week for a meeting at your computer in-box to discuss what is happening in the State of Missouri for over a year. Now that the campaign is over, I hope you have learned more about your state government and gained some insights into why someone like me would run for office. Whether you called neighbors, displayed a yard sign or just voted for me, your actions affected the outcome of this election. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Voter’s Guides
How do you know who to trust?
There are many voter’s guides floating around. Some are trustworthy and others are not. One that purports to be “family” oriented has a glaring mistake in it. The purpose of most voter’s guides is to show who best resonates with the values of their own organization, but they can hide the agendas that are not always in line with your values. When one is distributed in a church setting, there is an assumption that it should promote our values and help the parishioners discern which candidates possess the qualities most fitting with the Biblical standards.

What Are Your Choices? Bad, Bad or Excellent!
I was driving through a neighborhood and saw what appeared to be a replica of a human figure hanging. The hardest part about the Halloween season is that it flaunts our cultural obsession with evil. Some of this may be designed to desensitize us to the negatives associated with evil. A common expression is to vote for “the lesser of two evils” or “better to have the devil we know than the devil we don’t know”. My question is: “Why vote for evil or the devil?” We can do better than this.
While eating dinner, my 22 year old son asked me why some people think they are throwing away their vote if they give it to someone other than the presumed winner. He said, “People throw their vote away if they vote for the one more likely to win because that vote isn’t necessary. If you really want to make your vote count, vote for the one who best reflects your values, because that is where you will make the biggest difference. Anything less would be disingenuous and would be throwing your vote away.”

The Akin Saga
What Lessons Did We Learn?
All families have occasional clashes, but there are few scenes more awful than hearing a couple having a fight in the parking lot of a public venue. Something inside all of us wishes they would wait until they get home and close the doors. The same should be said for the Republican Party. Mitt Romney, Roy Blunt, Vicki Hartzler and many other prominent Republicans publicly called on Todd Akin to get out of the race. The most civil and respectful behavior would be to pick up the phone and talk in private. Todd could issue a public statement asking them to get out of their races when they make puzzling comments, but he doesn’t. Additionally, I cannot recall when I have ever heard of Democrats asking their candidates to resign or step aside.

Help Is On The Way!
What does it cost to run statewide?
This past week brought me to Camdenton for a Tailgate Party with some great supporters! Good friends in the Lake of the Ozarks area particularly understand the importance of having someone who is a champion of our property rights and our values.
