Candidate Season is Open!
If it looks like we are having fun, it’s because we are! Campaigns can be both exhilarating and draining at the same time. This is the first time in 20 years my name is not going on the ballot during an even year. We are now in the season when candidates can file for county, state or federal offices. If you are interested in running for office, it is not too late. In Missouri, you have until March 25 to file.
Running for office is truly a calling. The only way to endure the emotional and financial expense of a campaign is to have the kind of commitment that comes from within one’s heart. The old expression is, “Fire in the belly.” If you have it, you owe it to your philosophy to run, and run to win.
Every campaign, regardless of the outcome, is an opportunity to educate the voters. Running for office usually thickens the skin of the candidate and may be the last time the candidate is held accountable. So many times we might ask ourselves how an office holder gets away with bad votes. Election day for many of these elected officials may be the last teachable moment.
Most voters don’t do their own research, so the majority can be easily manipulated into voting for whoever has the slickest advertising campaign. In each election, more than half of the candidates lose. Usually there is a lot of excitement at the beginning, but many of the people who offer financial or physical help find a myriad of reasons why they cannot later fulfill their words. Many candidates end up with broken hearts and homes because they or their families did not handle the stress very well.
Counting the cost and having a committed support team is important. If you find yourself with a surplus of time, energy and money, becoming a candidate or helping a candidate can be a great way to satisfy your desire to make a positive difference.
If you find yourself in a place where it is more comfortable to run than to sit another election out, then it may be your time to file for office.
