Transparency From Our Government

Several people came to visit me at the Capitol this week to discuss their support for my bill, HB 1237, which allows adult adoptees to obtain copies of their birth certificates.

This week provided more opportunities to listen to people share why they feel our government needs to be more open, especially as it concerns public safety. KMOV, Channel 4 produced a segment demonstrating what happens when a newly paroled murderer takes up residency in our district.  To view and read a Channel 4 story click here: Do residents have a right to know? Truthfully, there could be murderers as well as sexual perpetrators in every district of our state.  The difference is that the sex offenders are listed on a registry and the murderers are not.

I disagree with the Governor and the parole board's decision to release this particular inmate.  From my own review of the case and discussions with persons who knew the victim, we should demand answers to questions regarding his early release. I am asking the Department of Corrections for an explanation.  When a person living in our neighborhood has been incarcerated for a violent past that included taking the life of another person, we should be allowed to have this information and thereby adequately protect ourselves from potential future crimes. A Suburban Journal article explains why residents are concerned: Convicted murderer released.

The Neighborhood Watch program functions on the principle that the crime rate can be reduced by observant neighbors.  Thomas Jefferson said, "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance."  We should never get to the point where we are protecting the rights of the criminals more than the rights of innocent citizens.

Your thoughts are important to me, so please let me know what you think about whether there should be a violent crime registry similar to our sex offender registry.

A Little Bit of Humor . . .

Sherlock Holmes and Matthew Watson were on a camping and hiking trip. They had gone to bed and were lying there looking up at the sky.

Holmes said, "Watson, look up. What do you see?

"Well, I see thousands of stars."

"And what does that mean to you?"

"Well, I guess it means we will have another nice day tomorrow. What does it mean to you, Holmes?"

"To me, it means someone has stolen our tent."
